How can I cool down my room!!?

I have four windows in my room. Its a little hard to explain but the two on top are about 2 feet tall and they're an arch shape, The two right below them are huge about 5x3. The windows are really pretty to look at but they're torture for me because whatever the weather is like outside, it feels that way in here. Even with central air and heat on. In the winter time it's freezing in here, which isn't that big of a deal because we have a space heater and it works very well. But in the summer, the heat in here in UNBEARABLE!! I have a ceiling fan, and also another fan in here too but all they do is blow around hot air. A neighbor suggested putting foil on the windows but my mom says she doesn't want to do that because its tacky.Lol. But are there any alternatives to foil that won't look bad but still keep the sun out and cool off the room?? Will someone pleaseeeee help me before I have a heat-stoke in here!Lol =) Thanks.
